Early Life and Education
Olga Hadžić was born in Novi Sad, a city in Serbia, on August 25, 1946. Her father was a lawyer, and her grandfather was a writer and doctor named Ilija Ognjanović.
She went to two schools in Novi Sad: the Gymnasium Jovan Jovanović Zmaj and a music school. She loved both math and music!
University Studies
Olga studied mathematics at the University of Novi Sad. She earned her first degree there in 1968. She then became an assistant at the university.
She continued her studies and earned a master's degree in 1970 from the University of Belgrade. In 1972, she completed her doctorate degree at the University of Novi Sad. A doctorate is the highest university degree you can get. Her main teacher for this was Bogoljub Stanković.
Later in her life, Olga also studied tourism. She earned another master's degree in 2005 and a second doctorate in 2006, both from the University of Novi Sad.
Career and Achievements
Olga Hadžić spent her entire career at the University of Novi Sad. She became an assistant professor in 1973. Then, she became an associate professor in 1977, and a full professor in 1981.
First Female Rector
In 1996, Olga Hadžić became the rector of the University of Novi Sad. The rector is like the main leader or president of a university. This was a very special achievement because she was the first woman in Serbia to hold this important position!
Journal Editor
Olga was also the first editor-in-chief for a math journal. It was called Univerzitet u Novom Sadu, Zbornik Radova Prirodno-Matematičkog Fakulteta, Serija za Matemati. This journal later became known as the Novi Sad Journal of Mathematics. She led the journal from 1971 to 1995.
Books on Mathematics
Olga Hadžić wrote several books about mathematics. Many of her books focused on fixed-point theorems. These theorems are important tools in math that help find solutions to equations.
Here are some of her books:
- Osnovi teorije nepokretne tačke (which means 'Foundations of fixed point theory'), published in 1978.
- Fixed point theory in topological vector spaces, published in 1984.
- Numeričke i statističke metode u obradi eksperimentalnih podataka (meaning 'Numerical and statistical methods in processing experimental data'), published in 1989.
- Fixed point theory in probabilistic metric spaces, published in 1995.
- Fixed point theory in probabilistic metric spaces, which she wrote with Endre Pap, published in 2001.
Recognition and Awards
Olga Hadžić was a very respected mathematician. She became a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1991. Being a member of an academy of sciences is a great honor. It means you are recognized as one of the best scientists in your country.
She was also a member of the Vojvodina Academy of Sciences and Arts. She became a corresponding member in 1984 and a regular member in 1990.
