Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Olimpia Ludovisi (born 1656 – died November 27, 1700) was a princess who ruled the Principality of Piombino in the year 1700. She was an important figure in her family's history, even though her time as ruler was very short.

Who Was Olimpia Ludovisi?

Olimpia Ludovisi was a noblewoman from Italy. She was part of the powerful Ludovisi family. Her life was different from her sisters because she chose to become a nun. This meant she dedicated her life to the church.

Her Family and Early Life

Olimpia was the oldest daughter of Niccolò Ludovisi. Her mother was Costanza Pamphili. The Pamphili family was also very important. Olimpia's uncle was a cardinal in the Vatican, named Camillo Pamphili.

Through her mother, Olimpia was related to Pope Innocent X. She was also related to Pope Gregory XV through her father's side. This shows her family had strong connections to important religious leaders.

Becoming a Princess

Olimpia had two sisters, Lavinia and Ippolita. Unlike them, Olimpia did not get married. Instead, she became a nun. This was a common choice for noblewomen at the time.

In 1699, Olimpia's older brother, Giovan Battista Ludovisi, passed away. He left his lands and titles to his baby son, Niccolo. The baby's mother, Anna Maria Arduino, was in charge as a regent. A regent is someone who rules for a child who is too young.

Sadly, the young child Niccolo also died in 1700. Because Olimpia was the closest living relative, she became the next ruler. She inherited all the family's lands, including the Principality of Piombino.

Her Short Reign

Olimpia Ludovisi became the Princess of Piombino. She was the second woman to rule Piombino on her own. The first was Isabella Appiani. Even after becoming a princess, Olimpia remained a nun.

Olimpia's rule as princess lasted only a few months. She passed away on November 27, 1700. Since she did not have any children, her titles and lands went to her only surviving sister, Ippolita. This kept the family's rule going in Piombino.
