Olusegun Kokumo Agagu (; 16 February 1948 – 13 September 2013) was an important Nigerian politician. He served as the governor of Ondo State in Nigeria from May 29, 2003, to February 2009. He was a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Early Life and Education
Olusegun Agagu started his schooling in 1954 at St. Luke's Anglican School in Okitipupa. In 1958, he moved to Ibadan and continued his primary education at Ebenezer African Church School. He also spent some time studying in Kano in 1959.
He finished his primary education in Ibadan in 1960. From 1961 to 1967, he attended Ibadan Grammar School. There, he passed his West African School Certificate and Higher School Certificate exams.
In 1968, Agagu was accepted into the University of Ibadan. He first studied Botany but later changed to Geology. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 1971.
He continued his studies at the University of Texas between 1973 and 1974, where he earned his master's degree in Geology. After returning to Nigeria, he completed his Ph.D. in Petroleum Geology from the University of Ibadan in 1978.
His Career in Government
Olusegun Agagu began his political career as the Deputy Governor of Ondo State. He served in this role from January 1992 to November 1993. During this time, his knowledge as a geologist helped Ondo State become an oil-producing state. This greatly boosted the state's economy.
Later, he was appointed as a federal minister by President Olusegun Obasanjo. He served as the Minister of Aviation starting in 1999. From 2000 to 2002, he was the Minister for Power and Steel.
In 2003, Olusegun Agagu was elected as the Governor of Ondo State. He served in this position until 2009. President Olusegun Obasanjo praised his work as governor in 2006, noting his careful planning and positive results.
Passing Away
Olusegun Agagu passed away on September 13, 2013, in Lagos.
A day before his burial, on October 3, 2013, a plane carrying his body and other passengers crashed shortly after takeoff from Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
