The Omaha National Bank Building is a historic building in Downtown Omaha, Nebraska. It was built in 1888 and 1889 at 1650 Farnam Street. The building has an Italian Renaissance style, which means it looks like old Italian buildings.

This building was almost torn down in 1978, but it was saved and fixed up. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. When it was first built, it was called the New York Life Insurance Building. It got its current name, the Omaha National Bank Building, in 1906.

History of the Building

This grand building was first used by the New York Life Insurance Company. In 1909, the Kountze Brothers bought it for their Omaha National Bank.

The building was designed by Frederick Elmer Hill. He worked for a famous group of architects called McKim, Mead, and White from New York City. They designed the building in a style called Renaissance Revival. This means it looked like buildings from the Renaissance period. The Omaha National Bank Building was the first building in Omaha to have 10 stories!

The bank's first location on S. 13th Street

The Omaha National Bank started way back in 1856. Its first home was at 212 South 13th Street. In 1906, the bank bought the big building on Farnam Street from the New York Life Insurance Company. They then completely updated it to make it their new headquarters.

A very important person in Omaha's early days, Ezra Millard, was the first president of the Omaha National Bank. Later, Joseph H. Millard became president. He was also a future mayor of Omaha and a senator for Nebraska.

The Building Today

In 1972, the Omaha National Bank joined with another bank and moved out of the building. After it was empty, there were plans to tear it down. But luckily, the building was saved and fixed up in 1978. It was turned into office spaces.

Today, the building is known as The Omaha Building. It is home to a law firm called Kutak Rock.
