History of the Resort
The Omni La Costa Resort & Spa began in the early 1960s. A real estate developer named Irwin Molasky found an old horse ranch. It was located in the hills near the coast of Southern California.
The idea was to create a resort where families could stay and enjoy many activities. It would offer lessons for all ages. The resort officially opened its doors on July 10, 1965. Back then, a room cost $22 per night. This price included access to golf, tennis, horse stables, and the swimming pool.
Golf Tournaments at La Costa
La Costa has been a popular spot for major golf tournaments. It hosted two important PGA Tour events for many years.
From 1969 to 1998, the resort was home to the Mercedes Championships. This event was originally called the Tournament of Champions. After 1998, this tournament moved to Hawaii.
Then, La Costa was chosen to host a new big event. This was the first WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in 1999. It hosted this event for seven out of eight years. In 2001, the tournament was played in Australia. The event later moved to Arizona in 2007.
In 2010 and 2012, the resort also hosted the Kia Classic. This is an LPGA tour event for women golfers. In 2010, about 43,000 people came to watch the tournament.
