The Omni Severin Hotel is a famous hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana. It first opened in 1913 as the Grand Hotel of Indianapolis. This historic building is part of the Indianapolis Union Station Wholesale District. It stands right across from the main building of Union Station. The hotel is also a proud member of Historic Hotels of America. This is a special program by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
A Look Back in Time
The hotel first opened its doors in 1913. It was built by Henry Severin Jr. He got help from Indianapolis Motor Speedway founders, Carl G. Fisher and James A. Allison.
Original Features
When you visit the hotel, you can still see some original parts. The huge Austrian crystal chandelier in the Severin Ballroom lobby is from 1913. The beautiful marble staircase is also from the first hotel.
New Owners and Renovations
Over the years, different owners managed the hotel. In 1966, Warren M. Atkinson bought it. He renamed it the Atkinson Hotel. The building then had a big renovation that cost $2.5 million.
In 1988, Mansur Development Corporation bought the hotel. They spent $40 million on a major restoration. After this, the hotel reopened as the Omni Severin Hotel. The original mailbox from 1913 is still used today. You can also see old furniture pieces on each elevator landing. These were once dressers in the hotel's guest rooms. The Omni Severin is the oldest hotel in downtown Indianapolis that is still open.
Modern Features
Today, the hotel has 424 guest rooms. It also has many rooms for meetings and banquets. The Omni Severin Hotel is part of the Omni Hotels chain.
