St. Leger Stakes (1784) |
Omphale (born 1781, died 1799) was a famous British racehorse. She was a Thoroughbred mare, which means she was a female horse bred for racing. Omphale is best known for winning the important St. Leger Stakes race in 1784.
Omphale's Early Life
Omphale was born in 1781 at a place called Castle Leavington, near Yarm. Her breeder, John Coates, owned the farm where she was born.
Omphale's father was a famous horse named Highflyer. Highflyer was known for never losing a race! Her mother was a mare named Calliope. Calliope had many foals, but Omphale was her only one by Highflyer.
Omphale was trained by Thomas Burdon. Before her big win, she wasn't feeling her best. She only had nine weeks of special training before the St. Leger race.
Omphale's Racing Days
Omphale had an exciting racing career. Her biggest win happened on September 28, 1784, at Doncaster. She won the ninth running of the St. Leger Stakes. This was her only race that year, and it was a huge victory!
In 1785, when she was four years old, Omphale raced again.
- On May 24, she finished third in a race in Northumberland.
- On June 24, she won the £50 Corporation Purse at Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
- In August, she won a special "forfeit" race at York. This happened because another horse's owner decided not to race against her.
- On September 7, Omphale won another race at Richmond.
- A few weeks later at Doncaster, she finished third in a long race.
Omphale continued racing in 1786.
- In June, she came in second in two different races at Hexham and Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
- Her very last race was on August 21 at York, where she finished third.
Omphale's Family: Being a Mom
After her racing career, Omphale became a broodmare in 1787. This means she was used for breeding to have baby horses. She had three colts (male foals) and four fillies (female foals) between 1788 and 1797. Omphale lived until 1799.
