Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) is a huge online database. It is also known as Sloane's. This database stores many different lists of numbers, called number sequences. For example, it includes the Fibonacci numbers and the powers of two.

The OEIS is the biggest database of its kind. It has more than 270,000 sequences! Each entry shows the first few numbers in the sequence. It also has keywords to describe it and links to more information. You can even see a graph of the sequence or hear it played as music.

What is the OEIS?

The OEIS is like a giant library for numbers. Imagine you find a list of numbers, like 1, 2, 4, 8, 16... and you want to know what comes next. You can type these numbers into the OEIS. It will then tell you what the sequence is, where it comes from, and what other numbers are in it.

How to Use the OEIS

You can search the OEIS in a few ways. You can type in keywords, like "prime numbers" or "square numbers." You can also search by typing in a part of a sequence you know. For example, you could search for all sequences that include both the numbers 15 and 118. This helps mathematicians and students discover new things about numbers.

What Each Entry Shows

Every sequence in the OEIS has its own page. This page usually includes:

  • The first few numbers of the sequence.
  • A short description of what the sequence is.
  • Keywords that help you understand it.
  • Links to books or articles where the sequence is mentioned.
  • Formulas that help you find more numbers in the sequence.
  • Sometimes, you can even see a picture (graph) of the sequence.
  • You can also hear what the sequence sounds like as music!
