What is One Progress Plaza?
One Progress Plaza is a skyscraper, which is a very tall building. It was built to be the "headquarters" for a company. A headquarters is like the main office where a company's leaders and many employees work.
Building History and Names
Over the years, this building has had a few different names. It was first known as Center Plaza. Then, it became the CP&L Building, named after Carolina Power & Light. Later, it was called the Progress Energy Building.
Plans for New Buildings
In 1999, Carolina Power & Light decided they needed a new, bigger main office. They were planning to build another tall tower. In 2000, Carolina Power & Light joined with another company, Florida Progress Corporation. When two companies join, it's called a "merger." This merger created a new company called Progress Energy.
The merger meant the company needed even more space. So, in 2000, Progress Energy bought a large piece of land next to their existing building.
Naming the Headquarters
On August 27, 2003, Progress Energy officially named its main office area "Progress Plaza." This name was meant to include all the buildings the company used. The idea was that the original building would be called One Progress Plaza. The new building they planned to build would be called Two Progress Plaza.
Changes Due to Mergers
In January 2011, Progress Energy announced another big merger. This time, they would join with Duke Energy. When companies merge, they sometimes need less office space because they combine teams. This made people wonder what would happen to One Progress Plaza.
However, on August 25, 2011, another company called Red Hat announced exciting news. They decided to move into the new building, Two Progress Plaza. This meant that Progress Energy had to keep all its Raleigh operations in One Progress Plaza after the merger with Duke Energy was complete.
