The Red Hat Tower is a tall building in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was finished in 2004 and cost about $100 million. This building has 19 floors and lots of space inside. It was first built for a company called Progress Energy Inc. Today, it is owned by J.P. Morgan Trust Co.
Building History
The idea for this building started in 1999. A company called Carolina Power & Light wanted a new main office. When they joined with Florida Progress Corporation in 2000, they became Progress Energy. This made the need for a new, bigger building even greater.
Planning and Construction
In 2002, Progress Energy announced their plans for the new building. They said it would cost around $80 million. The building would have offices, shops, and even places for people to live. They planned to finish it by 2004.
Progress Energy bought the land for the building in 2000. It was a two-acre site in downtown Raleigh. In April 2002, they chose a company called Carter & Associates to help build it. The first part of the building was planned to be ready in 2004. A second, larger part was planned for 2006.
Later in 2002, Progress Energy decided to build both parts at the same time. This helped them bring many employees from different offices into one main building. The Red Hat Tower officially opened on September 2, 2004, with a special ceremony.
New Owners and Name
In 2011, Progress Energy announced they would join with another company, Duke Energy. This made people wonder what would happen to the building. However, on August 25, 2011, a technology company called Red Hat announced good news. They planned to move 600 of their employees into the building.
Red Hat moved its main offices into the tower. A special event was held on June 24, 2013, to celebrate the building becoming the Red Hat Headquarters.
