Oneirology facts for kids
Oneirology is the scientific study of dreams. It comes from two ancient Greek words: oneiron, meaning "dream," and logia, meaning "the study of." This field explores how dreams work and what happens in our brains when we dream.
Scientists who study oneirology want to understand how dreams are connected to how our brain works, especially during sleep. They look at how dreams might affect memory and even how they relate to some mental health conditions. Unlike dream interpretation, which tries to find hidden meanings in dreams, oneirology focuses on the scientific process of dreaming itself.
Most of our dreams happen during a special part of sleep called REM sleep. REM stands for "Rapid Eye Movement." During this stage, your eyes move quickly, and your brain is very active, almost like when you're awake! Sometimes, people even experience "lucid dreaming," where they become aware that they are dreaming and can even control parts of their dream.
