Feed Ontario is an organization that helps people get food in the Canadian province of Ontario. It used to be called the Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB). Feed Ontario works with over 1,200 food banks and groups that help people who are hungry. They help more than 1 million people every year.

Helping People: The 2024 Report

Feed Ontario creates reports to show how many people need help getting food. Their report from 2024 showed that more and more people are using food banks across Ontario. Food banks are working very hard to keep up.

  • Over 1 million different people used food banks in Ontario. This was a big jump of 25% from the year before.
  • People visited food banks almost 7.7 million times in total. This was a 31% increase from the previous year.
  • About 43% of the people visiting food banks were new users.
  • Most visitors (71%) were adults, and 29% were children.
  • Every part of Ontario saw a large increase in how much food banks were used.
  • More than half (53.1%) of the people using food banks live alone.
  • Most clients (88.2%) rent their homes or live in social housing.
  • About 24% of households using food banks have someone working as their main way to earn money. This is twice as many as before the pandemic.

The organization started in 1992 as the Ontario Association of Food Banks (OAFB). It helped 125 food banks and over 1,100 other groups that provide food. These groups included food banks in cities and rural areas, community kitchens, and school meal programs.

The OAFB's main goal was to help communities by giving food banks what they needed. This included food, resources, and ideas to solve problems with food security (making sure everyone has enough food).

Every year, the OAFB published a report about hunger and food bank use in Ontario. Feed Ontario continues to do this today.

What the 2015 Report Showed

In 2015, the OAFB's report shared important facts:

  • In March 2015, over 358,000 people used food banks in Ontario. More than 120,000 of them were children under 18.
  • There was a 35% increase in senior citizens visiting food banks compared to the year before.
  • Almost half (49%) of food bank users lived by themselves.
  • Most food bank users (90%) rented their homes or lived in social housing.
  • Senior citizens are expected to make up 23% of the population by 2030.
  • People living alone made up almost 50% of food bank visitors. This was an 11% increase over five years.
  • On average, a person using a food bank spent 70% of their money on rent. This left very little for other important things.
  • About 1 in 3 jobs in Ontario were temporary, contract, or part-time. Someone working full-time at minimum wage earned about $21,000 a year. This was below Ontario's Low Income Measure.

In 2007, the OAFB was recognized for its new and helpful programs by newspapers like The Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star.

Changing to Feed Ontario

On February 11, 2019, the organization changed its name to 'Feed Ontario'. This new name better showed all the different ways the group helps people today.
