Ontur facts for kids
Ontur is a small town in the Albacete province of Spain. It's about 73 kilometers (around 45 miles) from the main city of Albacete. In 2005, about 2,421 people lived there. Ontur is well-known for some very special ancient Roman dolls that were found nearby.
Ancient Roman Dolls
Archaeologists found amazing ivory dolls in a child's grave. This grave was in a burial ground called "Ontur's Eras." They discovered four dolls made of ivory and one rare doll made of amber. This find was very exciting because of how many dolls they found and because of the unusual amber one.
Experts believe a Roman girl played with these dolls around 300 or 400 AD. If you want to see these ancient toys, they are on display at Albacete's Archaeological Museum.
Ontur Airfield: A Hub for Air Sports
The Ontur Airfield is located near the Sierra del Madroño mountains. Here, you'll find the Madroño mountain itself, which is the tallest in the area at 1,051 meters (about 3,448 feet) above sea level. The Regional Air Sports Centre is just two kilometers from the town.
This airfield is owned by the town and is open to the public. It has excellent facilities for many air sports. It's especially good for gliding, thanks to the great weather conditions in the area.
The airfield has hangars for planes and a long asphalt runway that is 1,200 meters (about 3,937 feet) long. There's also a campsite and seven small bungalows for visitors. For smaller aircraft, like model planes and ultralights, there's a dirt runway too.
Ontur has become a popular spot for glider pilots from all over the world. They come here because of the strong "thermals." Thermals are rising currents of warm air that help gliders stay in the air for a long time. These conditions allow pilots to fly for hundreds of kilometers!
