Onyx Cave
Cool rock formations inside Onyx Cave

Onyx Cave is a cool, small cave that you can visit! It's located about six miles (9.6 km) east of Eureka Springs, Arkansas. This cave has been a popular spot for tourists since 1893, which makes it the oldest show cave in Arkansas.

Even though it's called Onyx Cave, it doesn't actually have the gemstone onyx. Instead, it's filled with beautiful rock formations called flowstone. People sometimes call flowstone "cave onyx" because it looks a bit like the real thing. Many caves from the late 1800s and early 1900s were given similar names.

Exploring Onyx Cave

When you visit Onyx Cave, you get to explore it with special audio headsets. These headsets tell you all about the different rooms and amazing rock formations you see. It's like having your own personal guide!

What to Expect Inside

The cave has only one entrance and exit, so you go in and come out the same way. No need to worry about getting lost! Inside, the cave stays at a comfortable average temperature of 57 degrees Fahrenheit (13.8 degrees Celsius) all year round. This means it's cool in the summer and warmer than outside in the winter.

Onyx Cave in the Movies

Did you know Onyx Cave has been in a movie? Back in 1969, some parts of a movie called 'It's Alive' were filmed right inside Onyx Cave. It's pretty neat to think that a place you can visit was once a movie set!
