Operation Silver Wake was a special mission led by the United States in March 1997. Its main goal was to safely move American citizens and other people out of Albania. At that time, Albania was facing a lot of trouble and was not safe.

This mission was a type of non-combatant evacuation operation, often called a NEO. This means it was a military operation focused on rescuing people, not on fighting. The brave U.S. Marines carried out this important task. They were part of the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit.

What Happened in Albania?

In 1997, Albania was going through a difficult time. There was a lot of unrest and a rebellion happening. This made the country dangerous for many people, including those from other nations. Because of this danger, the United States decided to act quickly to protect its citizens.

The Mission to Evacuate

The U.S. Marines came from a group of ships called the USS Nassau Amphibious Readiness Group. These ships are designed to carry Marines and their equipment. They are like floating bases.

Marines Secure the Area

A specific group of Marines, from the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, played a key role. They secured the U.S. housing compound and the U.S. Embassy in Tirana. Securing means they made sure these places were safe and protected. This was important for gathering everyone who needed to be evacuated.

How Many People Were Rescued?

During Operation Silver Wake, over 900 people were safely moved out of Albania. This included American citizens, people who were not involved in any fighting (noncombatants), and other foreign nationals. The mission was a success in getting these individuals to safety.

Awards for Bravery

The units that took part in Operation Silver Wake received special awards for their efforts. These included the Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. These awards recognize excellent service by military units.

Some individual Marines also received the Combat Action Ribbon. This award is given to service members who have been in combat. The Humanitarian Service Medal was also given, which honors those who help in humanitarian efforts.
