Opuntia megarrhiza is a special type of plant in the Cactaceae family. This means it's a kind of cactus! It was named by Joseph Nelson Rose. This cactus is only found in one specific area: the state of San Luís Potosí in northeastern Mexico.

About This Unique Cactus

This cactus is quite rare. It grows in dry, low-lying grassland areas. Imagine a sunny place with lots of open fields. That's where you might find it!

Where Does It Live?

You can only find Opuntia megarrhiza in about five small groups. These groups are located around the tops of the La Trinidad and Álvarez Mountain Ranges. Both of these mountain ranges are in San Luis Potosí, which is in northeastern Mexico.

Why Is It in Danger?

Sadly, Opuntia megarrhiza is an endangered species. This means there are not many of these cacti left in the world. Several things are making it hard for this plant to survive:

  • Habitat Loss: Its natural home is disappearing. This can happen when land is used for building, farming, or other human activities.
  • Grazing: Animals like cows or goats eat the plants. If too many cacti are eaten, they can't grow and reproduce.
  • Harvesting: People sometimes collect this cactus. It is used for traditional medicine. While this might be a long-standing practice, too much collecting can harm the wild populations.

Protecting its habitat and making sure it's not over-collected are important steps to help this unique cactus survive.
