About the Orange Honeysuckle
The orange honeysuckle is a deciduous shrub. This means it's a woody plant that loses its leaves every autumn. It can grow quite tall, up to 6 meters (about 20 feet) high. Its branches have hollow centers.
What it Looks Like
The leaves of the orange honeysuckle grow in pairs, one across from the other. They are oval-shaped and can be between 4 and 10 centimeters (about 1.5 to 4 inches) long. A cool thing about this plant is that the last pair of leaves on each twig actually grow together, forming a disc shape.
Its Flowers and Fruits
The flowers are a bright orange-yellow color and look like small trumpets. They are about 2 to 4 centimeters (about 0.8 to 1.6 inches) long and have five small petal-like parts. These pretty flowers grow in circles, or "whorls," right above the disc-shaped leaves at the ends of the branches.
After the flowers bloom, the plant produces small, round berries. These berries are a see-through orange-red color and are less than 1 centimeter (about 0.4 inches) across.
Edible Uses
The berries of the orange honeysuckle can be eaten. You can enjoy them raw or cooked. However, they are not a very common food source for people.
