Honeysuckles are beautiful shrubs or vines that belong to the plant family called Caprifoliaceae. You can find them growing in many parts of the world, including North America, Asia, and Europe. There are about 180 different species (or types) of honeysuckle. Many of these are climbing plants that can grow quite tall.
Did you know that over 100 types of honeysuckle are found in China? In comparison, Europe and North America each have about 20 different types.
Most honeysuckles have pretty, bell-shaped flowers. These flowers are known for making a sweet liquid called nectar. This nectar can be eaten and is a favorite treat for hummingbirds and bees! After the flowers, honeysuckles grow fruit that look like small berries. These berries can be red, blue, or black and usually have several seeds inside. Be careful though, most honeysuckle berries are a little bit poisonous, so it's best not to eat them. However, a few types do have berries that are safe and tasty to eat.
