College Basketball Journey
Orien Greene was a very talented player in high school. He first decided to play college basketball at the University of Florida, which was close to his hometown. After a couple of years, Orien wanted more playing time. He then transferred to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. There, he became known for his strong defensive play. In his final year, he won the Defensive Player of the Year award in the Sun Belt Conference.
However, there was an investigation by the NCAA. It was found that some courses Orien took to stay eligible for games did not follow NCAA rules. This was a mistake that should have been noticed earlier by the school. Because of this, the NCAA decided that all 43 games Orien played in during certain seasons, including tournament games, would not officially count. His records from those games were also removed. The university accepted these penalties and was put on a two-year probation period.
Professional Basketball Career
Orien Greene was chosen by the Boston Celtics in the 2005 NBA draft. He was the 53rd player picked overall.
Starting in the NBA
Orien began his professional journey as a backup player for the Celtics. He became the main backup point guard when other players were injured or traded. On March 29, 2006, Orien was suspended by the Celtics for one game due to a driving incident.
On June 30, 2006, the Celtics decided to let Orien go. The Indiana Pacers then picked him up, and he played for them during the 2006–2007 season.
Playing Time and New Teams
With the Pacers, Orien played much less than he did with the Celtics. He appeared in only 41 games, averaging about 6 minutes per game. Other players joined the team, which meant Orien had less time on the court.
On August 30, 2007, Orien signed with the Sacramento Kings. However, he played only 7 games before the Kings let him go on November 15, 2007.
International and Development League Play
After his time with the Kings, Orien signed a short contract with the New Zealand Breakers. This team plays in the Australian National Basketball League.
Later, Orien played for the Utah Flash in the NBA Development League (now called the G League). On February 1, 2011, he returned to the NBA for a short time, signing a 10-day contract with the New Jersey Nets. After this, he went back to playing for the Utah Flash.
On November 10, 2011, Orien signed to play for the Halifax Rainmen in the NBL. Soon after, he joined the Los Angeles D-Fenders in the NBA D-League.
In October 2012, Orien signed with the Milwaukee Bucks but was released later that month. He then rejoined the Los Angeles D-Fenders. On February 25, 2013, he was traded to the Reno Bighorns.
Orien continued his career playing for teams around the world. In October 2013, he joined Al Alhy Benghazi in Libya. In December 2014, he played for Fuerza Regia in Mexico. On December 31, 2016, Orien signed with Guaros de Lara in Venezuela.
