Orien Greene's College Basketball Journey
Orien Greene was a very talented basketball player in high school. He chose to attend the University of Florida, which was his hometown college. After a couple of years, Orien wanted more time on the court. He decided to transfer to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
At Louisiana, Orien became known for his strong defensive play. He even won the Defensive Player of the Year award in his final year. Later, it was found that some of Orien's college courses didn't meet the rules for playing basketball. This meant that the games he played in during those times were officially removed from the team's record. His personal records from those games were also removed. The college faced penalties, including a period of probation.
Orien Greene's Professional Basketball Career
Orien Greene was chosen in the 2005 NBA draft as the 53rd player overall. He was picked by the Boston Celtics.
Starting with the Boston Celtics
Orien began his professional career as a backup player for the Celtics. He got more playing time because of injuries and trades involving other players. On March 29, 2006, the Boston Celtics suspended Orien for one game. This happened after he was involved in a driving incident in suburban Boston.
On June 30, 2006, the Boston Celtics released Orien. The Indiana Pacers then signed him. He played for their team during the 2006–2007 season.
Time with the Indiana Pacers and Sacramento Kings
Orien played very little during his season with the Pacers. He appeared in only 41 games, averaging about 6 minutes per game. This was a big change from his time with the Celtics, where he played in almost every game and averaged over 15 minutes. The Pacers had other players who competed for his position. This meant Orien was lower on the team's depth chart, so he didn't get much playing time.
Orien signed with the Sacramento Kings on August 30, 2007. However, he was released by the Kings on November 15, 2007, after playing only 7 games.
Playing Overseas and in the NBA D-League
In late November 2007, Orien signed a three-month contract. He joined the New Zealand Breakers, an Australian National Basketball League team. He was brought in to replace another player who was out for the season.
In 2010, Orien faced a two-year ban from playing. This was due to an issue with drug testing, with the ban starting from March 12, 2009.
After this, Orien played for the Utah Flash in the NBA Development League (now called the G-League). On February 1, 2011, Orien returned to the NBA. He signed a short-term contract with the New Jersey Nets. After this, he went back to play for the Utah Flash.
On November 10, 2011, Orien Greene signed to play for the Halifax Rainmen. This team is part of the NBL. Soon after, he joined the Los Angeles D-Fenders in the NBA D-League.
In October 2012, Orien signed with the Milwaukee Bucks. He was released by the team later that month. However, he was then re-signed by the Los Angeles D-Fenders. On February 25, 2013, Orien was traded to the Reno Bighorns.
In October 2013, he joined Al Alhy Benghazi in Libya. In December 2014, he played for Fuerza Regia in Mexico. On December 31, 2016, Orien Greene signed with Guaros de Lara in Venezuela.
