Oriol Bohigas Martí facts for kids
Oriol Bohigas i Martí (born December 22, 1937 – died October 22, 2013) was a brilliant physicist from both Spain and France. He made very important discoveries, especially in a field called quantum chaos.
Early Life and Education
Oriol Bohigas was born in the city of Barcelona, Spain. This is where he also went to university to study physics. He was very interested in how the world works at a very tiny level.
A Career in Science
In 1966, Oriol Bohigas moved to France. He became a researcher at the CNRS, which is a big French organization for scientific research. He worked there for his entire career.
He helped start a special laboratory called LPTMS (Laboratoire de Physique Théorique et Modèles Statistiques) at the University of Paris-Sud in Orsay. He later became a Director of Research Emeritus there, which means he was a very respected senior researcher. Before that, he led the Theoretical Physics Division at the Institute of Nuclear Physics (IPN) at the same university.
Oriol Bohigas passed away in Orsay, France.
Important Discoveries and Awards
Oriol Bohigas made major contributions to the theory of quantum chaos. This is a complex area of physics that studies how chaotic (unpredictable) systems behave in the quantum world. His work was especially important for understanding nuclear physics, which is the study of the tiny centers of atoms.
Because of his amazing work, he received several important awards:
- The Gay-Lussac-Humboldt Prize in 1991.
- The Holweck Medal in 1999.
- He also received an honoris causa doctorate from the Technische Universität Darmstadt. This is a special degree given to people who have made great achievements, even if they didn't study there.
