Daniel Orlando Smith, also known as D. Orlando Smith, was born on August 28, 1944. He is a well-known politician from the British Virgin Islands. He served as the leader of the government, called the Premier, for two different periods. He also led the main opposition party, helping to shape the country's future.

Orlando Smith's Early Life and Education
Orlando Smith went to high school in the British Virgin Islands from 1955 to 1961. After that, he continued his studies at the University of the West Indies. He also studied medicine in Scotland at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Later, he learned about public health at The Royal School of Public Health. He also attended the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
His Medical Career
Before becoming a politician, Orlando Smith worked as a doctor. He was a medical officer at Peebles Hospital in the British Virgin Islands. He also worked as a medical officer in London.
From 1975, he was a senior surgeon in the British Virgin Islands. He continued to work as a surgeon until 1999.
His Political Journey
Orlando Smith was one of the people who started the National Democratic Party (NDP). This party became very important in the British Virgin Islands.
Leading the Opposition
As the head of the NDP, Orlando Smith became the Leader of the Opposition. This happened after he won a seat in the House of Assembly of the British Virgin Islands in the 1999 election. He held this role from 1999 to 2003. He was also the Leader of the Opposition again from 2007 to 2011.
Serving as Premier
Orlando Smith served as the Premier of the Virgin Islands for two terms. His first term was from 2003 to 2007. His second term was from 2011 to 2019.
In 2018, he led a special trip to South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria. This was the first time the British Virgin Islands sent a trade group to Africa.
Stepping Down from Leadership
On June 23, 2018, Orlando Smith decided not to run for leader of the NDP again. Myron Walwyn took over as the new leader. Orlando Smith did not run in the 2019 election.
Personal Life and Recognition
In 2000, Queen Elizabeth II honored Orlando Smith. He was given the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This is a special award for people who have done great things.
In 2019, Peebles Hospital, where he used to work, was renamed in his honor. He is married and has three children.
