Ormes Society facts for kids
The Ormes Society was an online group that helped and celebrated black women who worked in the comic book industry. It was named after Jackie Ormes, a very important African-American comic artist.
The Story of The Ormes Society
The Ormes Society was started in 2007 by an artist named Cheryl Lynn Eaton. She was concerned because there weren't many different kinds of people, especially Black women, working in the comic book world. Cheryl wanted to create a group to support Black women artists and fans.
She decided to name the group after Jackie Ormes, who was a pioneering African-American comic illustrator. The group's website became a place where comic book creators could connect and work together. It also served as a special collection, or archive, of the members' artwork.
The group stopped for a short time in July 2015. Cheryl Lynn Eaton thought it wasn't needed anymore. It started up again briefly a year later. However, by 2021, it seemed to have stopped again. Its website was gone, and its social media pages had not been updated since 2017.
