History of the Ormes Society
How the Group Started
The Ormes Society was started in 2007 by an artist named Cheryl Lynn Eaton. She noticed that there weren't many different kinds of people working in the comic book industry. She especially wanted to help and support black women who were artists or fans of comics.
Who Was Jackie Ormes?
Cheryl Lynn Eaton decided to name the group after Jackie Ormes. Jackie Ormes was a groundbreaking African-American comic illustrator. She was also America’s very first black female professional cartoonist!
What the Society Did
The group's website became a central place where comic book creators could connect with each other. It was like a special online club where they could share ideas and support one another. The website also kept a collection of the members' artwork, like an archive of their amazing creations.
When the Group Ended
The Ormes Society stopped for a short time in July 2015. Cheryl Lynn Eaton thought it might not be needed anymore. It was started again briefly about a year later in 2016. However, since 2017, its social media hasn't been updated, and its website is no longer active. As of August 2025, the group is no longer running.
