Alitha E. Martinez is a talented American comic book artist. She is famous for her work on popular comics like Marvel's Iron Man and DC's Batgirl. She has also drawn for webcomics related to the TV show Heroes. Alitha has worked with many big comic book companies. These include Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Image Comics, and Archie Comics.
Her Journey in Comics
Alitha Martinez studied at the School of Visual Arts. This was in the mid-1990s. She often found herself as the only girl in her cartooning classes. This shows how determined she was.
In the late 1990s, Alitha worked as an assistant. She helped other artists with backgrounds and inking. Her first known work was in 1993 on the series Cable. Alitha considers 1999 her big break. She was assisting Marvel editor Joe Quesada. Through this connection, she became the main artist for Iron Man. She worked on this comic for much of 2000 and 2001.
After a few years of various projects, Alitha became a regular artist. She worked on the Heroes webcomics. These were made in 2008–2009. They added to the popular Heroes television show.
Later, Alitha moved to DC Comics. She helped create a villain named Knightfall. This character appeared in Batgirl #10 in 2012.
In recent years, she helped create artwork for a special comic. This was a commemorative issue of Riverdale by Archie Comics. Alitha also drew most of the first five issues of World of Wakanda. This comic is a spin-off from Marvel's Black Panther series. It was mainly written by Roxane Gay. In 2017, she was a guest artist for Lazarus X+66. This was a limited series from Image Comics. She also worked on five issues of Marvel Comics' Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
In 2019, Martinez released a series called Omni. She worked with writer Devin K. Grayson on this project. It was for the Humanoids Publishing comic line.
In 2020, Alitha's art was part of an exhibit. It was called Women in Comics: Looking Forward, Looking Back. This show was at the Society of Illustrators in New York City.
Alitha Martinez also teaches at the School of Visual Arts.
