The Eisner Awards are special prizes given to people who create amazing comic books in America. Many people think they are the most important awards in the comic world. They are like the Academy Awards for movies, but for comics!

The first awards were given out in 1988. They honored comic books that came out in 1987. Since 1991, the Eisner Awards ceremony has happened every year at San Diego Comic-Con. The awards are named after Will Eisner, a famous cartoonist and writer. He often attended the ceremony until he passed away in 2005.

A group of five or six experts chooses the nominees for each award. Then, people who work in the comic book industry vote to pick the winners. This group of experts often includes a comic book store owner, a librarian, and a researcher. As of 2021, there are 32 different award categories.

History of the Eisner Awards

The Eisner Awards started in 1988. The Harvey Awards also began that same year. Both awards were created because the Kirby Awards had stopped in 1987. Dave Olbrich helped start the non-profit group that created the Eisners.

There were no Eisner Awards given out in 1990. This was because of problems with the voting. Dave Olbrich left his role, and Jackie Estrada became the award administrator in 1990. The awards ceremony has been held at San Diego Comic-Con every year since 1991.

In 2006, it was decided that all the old records and materials from the Eisner Awards would be kept safe. They are now stored at the James Branch Cabell Library. This library is part of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.
