Oromahoe (which is spelled Oromāhoe in the Māori language) is a small community in the Northland area of New Zealand. It is located right on State Highway 10, which is an important road in the region.
About Oromahoe
Oromahoe is home to a special place called the Oromāhoe Marae. A marae is a traditional meeting ground for Māori people. It includes a meeting house, which here is called Ngāti Kawa. This marae is a gathering place for local Māori groups, known as hapū. These specific hapū are Ngāti Kawa and Ngāti Rāhiri, who are part of the larger Ngāpuhi tribe.
Oromahoe School
Oromahoe School is a school for both boys and girls. It teaches students from year 1 to year 8, which covers primary school ages. In 2009, there were 58 students attending the school.
The school first started in the 1870s as a mission school. Later, it became known as a Native School. It's interesting to know that most of the students, over 80%, do not live close enough to walk to school. They are driven to and from school by their families.
