Occupation | Alaafin of Oyo |
Orompoto (also spelled Oronpoto) was a powerful leader of the Oyo Empire, an important kingdom located in what is now modern-day western and north-central Nigeria. She was special because she was the first woman to rule as "king" (called Alaafin) during the empire's main period. Orompoto lived in the 1500s and was known for her amazing skills as a warrior and military leader.
A Queen Who Ruled Like a King
Orompoto became the Alaafin of the Oyo Empire because there were no male family members ready to take the throne after her brother, Eguguojo. This was a very important event because she was the first woman to hold this powerful position during the empire's imperial era. Her kingdom was located in parts of modern-day western and north-central Nigeria. Some old stories say that she magically changed into a man before she became ruler in the new capital city of Igboho.
Protecting the Oyo Empire
Orompoto was a strong leader who worked hard to protect her people and their land. In 1555, she led her army to drive out the Nupe people who had invaded Oyo. She was also the second ruler to govern from the new capital city of Igboho. Her leadership helped keep the Oyo Empire safe and strong during her time.
Master of Cavalry and Battle
Orompoto was very skilled in military battles, especially when using horses. She likely got her horses from the Borgu region. She was known for being an excellent horse rider herself. She even created a special group of cavalry officers within her army. These horse-riding soldiers were a new and powerful part of the Oyo army. They were very effective in battles against the empire's enemies.
Orompoto was considered a very skillful warrior. She showed her bravery and cleverness at the Battle of Illayi. During this fight, she lost three of her war chiefs, known as Gbonkas, one after another. The third chief fell with a strange grin on his face. The enemies thought he was still alive and mocking them. This made them feel overwhelmed and unable to win, so they left the battlefield. The Oyo army then claimed victory. Orompoto's strong leadership and military strategies helped her empire succeed.
She was later succeeded by Ajiboyede as the next Alaafin.
