Famous People from Oscar

Oscar is known for being the home of some very important people. These individuals made a big difference in the world through their work.

Ernest J. Gaines: A Renowned Author

One of Oscar's most famous residents was the novelist Ernest J. Gaines. He was born on the River Lake plantation, where his family had lived for many generations. Ernest Gaines moved to California when he was 15 years old.

He became a very successful writer, known for his powerful stories. Gaines won major awards for his books, including the National Book Critics Circle Award. He also received a special "genius grant" from the MacArthur Foundation. Later in life, he bought a part of the old plantation and built his home there.

The Lawless Family: Education and Medicine

Oscar also played a role in the lives of other notable figures. In the early 1900s, a school was started in Oscar by Reverend LaForest A. Planving. Sadly, he faced difficulties and was harmed by some local people.

Later, another teacher named Alfred Lawless came to Oscar to reopen the school. He also faced challenges and was told to leave. Alfred Lawless then moved to New Orleans. A high school there, Alfred Lawless High School, was named in his honor. His son, Theodore K. Lawless, who lived with him in Oscar at the time, became a famous doctor and helper of communities.
