Oso Creek is a natural stream located in the U.S. state of Texas. It flows through Nueces County and is found just south of the city of Corpus Christi. This creek is an important part of the local environment.

Where is Oso Creek Located?

Oso Creek is entirely within Nueces County, Texas. It starts near the western edge of Corpus Christi. This is about 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of Robstown. The creek then flows southeast for about 28 miles (45 km).

Its journey ends when it reaches Cayo del Oso. This spot is about 3 miles southwest of the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station. The land around the creek is mostly flat or gently rolling. It has dark, clay soil.

You can find plants like mesquite trees, different grasses, and cacti growing there. In 1747, Captain Joaquín Orobio y Basterra explored the Gulf Coast. He identified this stream and named it La Purísima Concepción. Today, Oso Creek and Oso Bay act as a natural border. They separate the Southside and Flour Bluff areas of Corpus Christi.

Flooding and Water Levels

Oso Creek can experience serious flash floods. This often happens when tropical storms bring heavy rain. It also floods when the area gets many days of continuous rainfall.

On September 20, 2010, the creek swelled dramatically. Its water level rose to more than 30 feet (9.1 meters). This was the highest level ever recorded for Oso Creek. Floods can cause water to rise very quickly.
