Ostend is a small town on Waiheke Island in New Zealand. It's part of the Auckland Region and is located in the Hauraki Gulf. Ostend sits on the western side of Waiheke Island. It's built around a small piece of land that sticks out into Putiki Bay. This bay is one of two large inlets on the island's southwest coast. Ostend is just east of Surfdale and southwest of Onetangi.
Ostend is connected to Surfdale by a road that crosses Putiki Bay. Many boat owners use the beach here to moor their boats. It's easy to get to Ostend from the mainland marina at Half Moon Bay. Ostend is an important place on the island. It has the island's only big supermarket, a local council office, a church, and a medical center. People often call it the "industrial area" of Waiheke Island because of the businesses there.
A Look Back: Ostend's History
In late 1915, a fun competition was held to name this new town. A woman from Auckland, Miss Boylan, won the contest. She suggested the name Ostend. This name comes from a city in Belgium that was important during World War I. The land in the Ostend area was first sold at an auction on February 18, 1916. Originally, the name Ostend referred to land near both Putiki Bay and Onetangi Bay. Today, these areas are known as Ostend and Onetangi.
