A Look at Oswayo's History

Oswayo became an official borough on January 8, 1901. It was named after the larger Oswayo Township.

The Pine Forest Valley

The Oswayo Valley was once famous for its amazing white pine forests. These trees grew very tall, often 100 to 150 feet high. Their lowest branches were high up, 50 to 75 feet from the ground. The forest was so dense that not much else could grow underneath.

Early settlers made their living by cutting down these valuable white pine trees. The logs were often floated down rivers during spring floods. Cities along the Ohio River specifically asked for "Oswayo White Pine" because of its excellent quality.

From Brindleville to Oswayo

The village was first known as Brindleville. Its name changed when a post office was opened in the 1840s.

In its early days, Oswayo had two sawmills and shingle mills. There were also small shops for local needs. Doctors and lawyers worked there too.

Industries and Changes Over Time

In 1877, a large tannery (a place where animal hides are turned into leather) started operating in Oswayo. It was later sold to the P.H. Costello Company. Sadly, this tannery was destroyed by a fire in 1903. At that time, the Penn Tanning Company owned it.

From 1894 to the 1930s, the New York & Pennsylvania Railroad served the town. This helped with transportation and trade.

Oswayo's population likely reached its highest point around 1901, with about 1,000 people. However, after the tannery closed and other lumber businesses left, the population dropped. By 1910, only 382 residents remained. By 1920, it was down to 209.

Today, farming is still important in Oswayo. There are also some loggers in the area. A state Fish Cultural Station is located near the village. It raises trout that are used to stock streams across Pennsylvania.
