Our Lady Help of Christians Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Portico, a part of Prescot in Merseyside. It was started in 1790 by a group of priests called the Jesuits. It serves as a local parish church.
History of the Church
The Jesuits, a Catholic religious order, were living in the Portico area from 1716. They had a house on Scoles Lane. When it became allowed to build a Catholic church in the area, a local architect named George Marsh was chosen to design it.
In 1790, a small building was constructed. It included a presbytery (a house for priests) and a chapel (a small church). The chapel was built as an addition to the back of the presbytery. For a long time, this was the only Catholic church nearby. This meant that local Catholics had to come here to attend Mass.
This changed in 1856 when another Catholic church, Our Lady Immaculate and St Joseph Church, was built in the center of Prescot town.
At some point in the 20th century, the Jesuits handed over the church to the Archdiocese of Liverpool. The Archdiocese still looks after the church today. In 2005, a special chapel called the Pope John Paul II Blessed Sacrament chapel was opened inside the church.
About the Parish
A parish is a local community of people who belong to a specific church. Our Lady Help of Christians Church holds three Sunday Masses each week. One Mass is on Saturday evening at 6:30 pm. The other two are on Sunday mornings, at 9:00 am and 10:30 am.
Both Our Lady Help of Christians Church and Our Lady Immaculate and St Joseph Church work closely with Our Lady's Primary School in Prescot. The school's main goal is to act as "a living community of God" in everything they do.
