The Our Lady of Mercy Church of Buenos Aires (also known as Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Merced) is a beautiful Catholic church in Argentina. You can find it in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of San Nicolas. It stands at the corner of Reconquista Street and Tte. Gen. Juan Domingo Perón Street.
History of the Church
The building of this church started around 1721. Two Italian architects, Giovanni Andrea Bianchi and Giovanni Battista Primoli, first designed it. They were the ones who began the construction work.
Later, in 1900, architect Mario Buschiazzo finished a big update. He designed the front of the church that you see today.
The Old Cemetery
Like many old churches, Our Lady of Mercy Church once had a cemetery. Many people from Buenos Aires were buried there. This included important politicians and soldiers.
It's interesting to know that this old cemetery is now the site of another church. The Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was built there in 1830.
