The Our Lady of Mercy Church of Buenos Aires (also known as Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Merced) is an important Roman Catholic church in Argentina. You can find it in the San Nicolas neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It stands at the corner of Reconquista Street and Tte. Gen. Juan Domingo Perón Street.
A Look Back at the Church's History
This beautiful church was first designed by two Italian architects. Their names were Giovanni Andrea Bianchi and Giovanni Battista Primoli. They began building it way back in 1721. The front part of the church, called the façade, was later updated by architect Mario Buschiazzo. He finished this work in 1900.
The Old Cemetery
Like many old churches, Our Lady of Mercy Church once had its own cemetery. Many people from Buenos Aires were buried there. This included important politicians and soldiers. It's interesting to know that the place where this cemetery once stood is now home to the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. That cathedral was built in 1830.
