The Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral (which in French is Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l’Assomption) is a very important building in Moncton, New Brunswick. It is also known as The Monument for Recognition. You can find it at 226 St-George Street.

This cathedral is part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Moncton. Since 2019, it has also been home to a special place called the Monument for Recognition in the 21st century (MR21). This is an interpretation centre where you can learn more about its history.

History of the Cathedral

The cathedral was built on the site of an older church. This older church was called the crypt-chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption parish. It was started in 1914 by Henri D. Cormier.

In 1937, Louis-Joseph-Arthur Melanson became the first archbishop of the new Archdiocese of Moncton. On January 9, 1938, he shared his plan to build a large cathedral. This new cathedral would be dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Building the Cathedral

The person who designed the cathedral was an architect named Louis-Napoléon Audet. He was from Sherbrooke. Building work started on April 24, 1939. The company that built it was the Ambrose Wheeler company from Moncton.

The electrical wiring was put in by a company from Quebec called M. T.-E. Danahue. A special event happened on June 13, 1939. Archbishop Melanson blessed the cornerstone of the building at 3:00 PM.

The outside and inside of the cathedral were finished by the fall of 1940. The official opening happened on November 21, 1940. Many important church leaders were there. These included Cardinal Villeneuve from Quebec. Also present were Bishop Patrice Alexandre Chiasson from Bathurst and Bishop Patrick Albert Bray from Saint John.
