Our Lady of the Assumption Church, also known as St Mary's Church, is a Roman Catholic church in Rhyl, Denbighshire, Wales. It is a place where people gather for worship. This church was first started in 1851 by a group of priests called the Jesuits. It was rebuilt in 1973 to make it safe and modern. The first church built here was very important because it was the first one the Jesuits built in Wales after they opened St Beuno's College in 1848.
History of the Church
How it Started
A group of priests called the Jesuits from St Beuno's College started helping Catholic people in Rhyl in 1851. At first, church services were held in a local pub. Later, they rented a public hall in the town centre. This hall was used as both a church and a school.
In 1854, the Jesuits bought some land on Ffynnongroew Road. They built a small church there that could hold about 150 people. By 1861, it was clear that a bigger church was needed. So, in 1862, they decided to build a new church on the corner of Ffynnongroew Road and Wellington Road. The old chapel then became a primary school.
On March 3, 1863, a special ceremony took place where the first stone of the new church was laid. This was done by James Brown, who was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Shrewsbury. The new church officially opened on December 8, 1863. It had a special window designed by John Hungerford Pollen.
Rebuilding the Church
At some point in the 1900s, the Jesuits handed over the running of the church to the Diocese of Wrexham. A diocese is like a church region, and they still manage the church today.
In 1955, the old school building, which was once the first chapel, had to be moved. It was in bad condition and needed repairs. A new school, called Ysgol Mair, was built. The old school building then became the church hall.
In 1973, the church building itself was found to be unsafe. It was too old and weak to be used anymore. So, a new church had to be built. The old church hall was taken down, and the new church was built on that same spot. Building work started in 1973 and was finished on December 21 of that year. The new church cost £230,000 to build.
Church Services
The church has one Sunday Mass at 10:00 AM. There are also weekday Masses at 9:30 AM from Tuesday to Friday.
