The Outlook station is a historic building in Outlook, Saskatchewan. It used to be a busy railway station. Today, it is home to the Outlook & District Heritage Museum. This station was an important stop for trains traveling across Canada.

The Story of Outlook Railway Station

The Outlook station was built by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1909. It was part of a new railway line connecting Moose Jaw to Edmonton.

Why Outlook Needed a Big Station

The CPR built a much larger station in Outlook than you might expect for a town its size. This was because Outlook was a "division point" on the railway. A division point is like a major hub where train crews would change, and trains might be refueled or checked.

The station also had a large yard. This yard included buildings and tools for maintaining and servicing trains. This was especially important before diesel engines became common.

A Busy Hub and Its Changes

The Outlook station became a very important place for travel and trade. This was partly because of the nearby Skytrail bridge. This bridge helped trains cross the South Saskatchewan River.

Over time, fewer people traveled by train. By the 1950s, the station mainly handled local passengers. Freight trains continued to use the line into the 1970s.

From Station to Museum

The railway line and the Skytrail bridge were eventually closed. The very last train crossed the Skytrail bridge on March 16, 1987.

Even though trains no longer stop there, the Outlook station is still important. In 2003, the building was named a municipal heritage site. This means it is protected because of its historical value. Today, the old station welcomes visitors as the Outlook & District Heritage Museum. It helps people learn about the town's past.
