Oxmoor Center is a popular Louisville, Kentucky shopping mall located at 7900 Shelbyville Road in the eastern part of the city. It first opened its doors on July 7, 1971. Today, it's a big place with over 100 stores and places to eat, managed by Brookfield Properties Retail Group.
The Story of Oxmoor Center
How It All Started: The 1970s
When Oxmoor Center first opened, it had two main department stores: Shillito's on the east side and Stewart's on the west. Shillito's was a big, three-story store, and it even had a small restaurant on its top floor! The mall also had a cool central area with a large, round fountain.
In the early days, Oxmoor Center had some unique spots. There was a mini-golf course called Putters Park on the upper level. You could also find a games store called Something to Do, a tailor shop, and a shoe store. The mall even had four movie screens, which later grew to six.
A big change happened in July 1984 when a new part of the mall was built. This new section added a Sears store, which moved from another location.
Did you know the land the mall is on used to be part of a large farm called Oxmoor Farm? The land was leased for the mall because of a special agreement, and the mall still leases the land today.
Growing and Changing: The 1980s to Today
Over the years, the main stores at Oxmoor Center changed their names many times. Shillito's became Lazarus, then Lazarus-Macy's, and finally Macy's. Stewart's also changed names several times before becoming Von Maur.
In 1989, a food court was added to the mall's upper level, giving shoppers more dining options. In 1997, a two-level Kohl's store opened right next to the mall.
The mall got a big makeover in 1998. It received a new main entrance, taller ceilings, and escalators, making it look much more modern. In 2001, a new sports store called Galyan's Trading Company opened in the front parking area. This store later became a Dick's Sporting Goods in 2004.
Today, Oxmoor Center is home to major stores like Macy's, Von Maur, H&M, and Dick's Sporting Goods. It covers a huge area, about 960,000 square feet!
In 2013, the mall had another big renovation. The old food court area in the middle was taken down and replaced with a new central court. This update added comfy seating areas and even a play area for kids near the Sears store, just in time for the Christmas shopping season.
The Sears store at the mall closed its doors on January 14, 2018. There are talks that Topgolf might open in that space in the future.
