Pánuco (pronounced PAH-noo-koh) is a city in the Mexican state of Veracruz. It's located in a part of the state called the Huasteca Alta region. The city sits right on the banks of the Río Pánuco. It's also the main city (or "municipal seat") for the larger Pánuco Municipality.
In 2005, about 33,122 people lived in the city of Pánuco. The city is led by a Municipal President, currently Oscar Guzmán de Paz.
The History of Pánuco
Pánuco has a long and interesting history. Many people believe it was founded by a famous Spanish explorer named Hernán Cortés. This happened on December 22, 1522. He named it Villa de Santiesteban del Puerto. It was one of the very first towns (or ayuntamientos, meaning local governments) established by Europeans in the Americas.
For a long time, Pánuco was the capital of the Pánuco Province during the early colonial period. It officially became a city on June 30, 1931.
Another explorer, Hernando de Soto, and his group stopped in Pánuco in 1541 after he passed away.
Sadly, on April 23, 1900, a big fire destroyed much of Pánuco. More than 2,000 people lost their homes because of this event.
