Pío Caro Baroja was born in Madrid, Spain, on April 5, 1928. He was the fourth son in his family. His father, Rafael Caro Raggio, was an editor. He started a publishing company in Madrid in 1917.
His Family
Pío's mother was Carmen Baroja Nessi. She was a Spanish writer. She also studied different cultures, which is called ethnology. She wrote under the pen name Vera Alzate.
Pío Caro Baroja came from a very creative family! His uncle was the famous writer Pío Baroja. His brother, Julio Caro Baroja, was a Basque anthropologist. This means he studied the people and culture of the Basque region in Spain.
His Education and Early Career
Pío studied law at the University of Madrid. After finishing his studies, he moved to Mexico. There, he worked as a film critic. This means he wrote reviews and opinions about movies. Later, he started making documentaries.
Returning to Spain
After his uncle, Pío Baroja, passed away, Pío Caro Baroja returned to Spain. He and his brother, Julio, worked together. They focused on documenting Spanish folklore. Folklore includes traditional stories, customs, and beliefs of a community.
They first worked with a company called No-Do. Later, they collaborated with Televisión Española, which is Spain's national TV channel.
Pío Caro Baroja as an Author
