Público (which means 'Public' in Spanish) is an online newspaper from Spain. It used to be a printed newspaper that came out every day, from 2007 to 2012. Even though the printed version stopped, Público is still active as a website.

About Público

Público started in September 2007. It was founded by Jaume Roures, who leads a company called Mediapro. This newspaper was one of only two big national papers in Spain that supported left-wing ideas. It had stronger left-wing views than another newspaper called El País.

A Newspaper for Young Readers

Público also wanted to reach younger readers. The printed paper was shorter than other newspapers. It was also much cheaper, costing only 50 cents when it first came out. Every day, about 250,000 copies of Público were printed.

Moving to Online News

After a few years, Público started losing money. It had a debt of about €9 million. Because of this, the printed version of Público stopped being published in February 2012. In its last year as a printed paper, Público was the ninth biggest general newspaper in Spain. It was also the fifth biggest newspaper based in Madrid.

The company that owned Público, Mediapro, decided to keep the newspaper's website, publico.es, going. The website has continued to be an active online newspaper ever since. In June 2016, Público started working together with CTXT, another independent online publication from Spain.

Editors of Público

The editor is the main person in charge of a newspaper. Here are the people who have been editors of Público:
