History of P. N. Gadgil Jewellers
How the Company Started (1832–1890)
Ganesh Gadgil began his jewellery business on November 29, 1832. It was first called Gadgil Jewellers. In the beginning, he sold jewellery from a busy street. Later, in 1860, he moved his shop to a traditional home called a waada in Sangli.
His family had a history of being savakars, which means moneylenders. They helped the kings of the Sangli State. Because of this, the Gadgil family became the official royal jewellers to the Patwardhan kings.
Growing the Business (1890–1958)
Ganesh Gadgil had three sons. His middle son, Narayan Gadgil, continued the jewellery business. His other sons chose different paths. In 1874, Ganesh Gadgil changed the company's name. He named it P. N. Gadgil Jewellers after his grandson, Purshottam Narayan Gadgil.
After Ganesh Gadgil passed away in 1890, Narayan Gadgil and his sons took over. When Narayan died in 1920, Purshottam Gadgil and his brothers managed the company. The family continued to lead the business after Purshottam's death in 1954.
Expanding to Pune (1958–2012)
In 1938, Anant Gadgil joined the family business. He worked at the Sangli store for almost 20 years. In 1958, he and his cousin opened a new store in Pune. This new store was also called P. N. Gadgil Jewellers & Company.
This meant the company now had two locations. Anant managed the Pune store. The Sangli store was managed by other family members. The Sangli branch continued under the management of Vasudev Gadgil's family after his death in 1965.
Becoming a Public Company (2012–Present)
In 2012, the Pune and Sangli branches became separate companies. The Pune operations kept the name P. N. Gadgil & Company. Anant Gadgil's son and grandson, Saurabh Gadgil, took over part of the business after Anant's death in 2014.
Saurabh Gadgil became the chairman and managing director. He helped change the company into a modern business. In September 2024, the company offered its shares to the public for the first time. This is called an Initial Public Offering (IPO). They raised about ₹1,100 crore. After this, the company's shares were listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange. The Gadgil family still owns most of the company.
How P. N. Gadgil Jewellers Works
P. N. Gadgil Jewellers mainly sells jewellery in stores. Most of their stores are in Maharashtra, India. They have stores that the company owns and stores that are run by other businesses (franchises). In 2014, they started a factory in Mumbai to make diamonds.
