About Pablo González Velázquez
Pablo González Velázquez was born in Jaén, Spain, a city in southern Spain. Most of what we know about his life comes from an art historian named Juan Agustín Ceán Bermúdez.
Velázquez was the leader of a family of artists. His three sons, Antonio González Velázquez, Alejandro, and Luis, all became painters. Pablo Velázquez moved to Madrid, the capital of Spain, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.
His Sculptures and Artworks
Pablo González Velázquez created many sculptures for churches in Madrid. However, not all of his works have survived over time.
The Statue of San Luis
One of his most famous surviving works is the statue of San Luis (Saint Louis). He made this statue in 1716 for the front of a local church. Later, when the old church was taken down, the statue was moved to the Carmelite church.
Other Important Works
He also created sculptures for the altarpiece of the Calatravas church. An altarpiece is a piece of art that stands behind the altar in a church. Some historians believe these sculptures were part of a larger design by another famous artist, José Benito de Churriguera.
Ceán Bermúdez also thought that Velázquez made the sculptures of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne. These statues were originally in an old school in Madrid. They were thought to be lost in 1936, but they were later found. Today, they are part of the collection at the National Sculpture Museum (Valladolid).
Other sculptures, like those of Saint Zacharias and Saint Elizabeth, found in the church of the Venerable Third Order in Madrid, might also have been made by him.
