Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pablo Legote, whose real name was Paul Legot (1598–1671), was a talented Spanish painter from the 1600s. He was born in Luxembourg but moved to Seville, Spain, with his family when he was young, around 1609 or 1610.

Pablo Legote's Art Career

Pablo Legote worked with another famous artist, Alonso Cano, between 1629 and 1636. They painted and added gold decorations (called gilding) in the church of Lebrija. Legote painted several important religious scenes there. These included the Annunciation (when an angel tells Mary she will have Jesus), the Nativity (the birth of Jesus), and the Epiphany (when the Three Wise Men visit Jesus). He also painted pictures of Saint John the Evangelist and Saint John the Baptist.

In 1647, an important church leader named Cardinal Spinola, who was the Archbishop of Seville, asked Legote to paint a series of full-length pictures of the apostles for his palace. Another similar series of apostle paintings was found in the Hospital de la Piedad church. People thought these might have been painted by Legote or another artist named elder Herrera.

Later, in 1662, Legote moved to Cadiz. There, he was hired to paint special banners for the royal fleet, which were the king's ships.
