Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Pablo Palazuelo (born October 8, 1915 – died October 3, 2007) was a famous Spanish painter and sculptor. He was known for his unique way of looking at art, focusing on shapes and forms rather than just what they looked like.

Pablo Palazuelo's Artistic Journey

Pablo Palazuelo was invited to join the Galérie Maeght, which is now called Galérie Lelong. This partnership lasted for about 50 years. In 1952, Palazuelo received the important Kandinsky Prize.

He started to focus on the idea of "form" itself. This meant he cared more about how shapes were made than what they were supposed to represent. In 1953, his studies into form led to a big discovery. He called it "Trans-geometría." This was his way of turning the rhythms of nature into art.

His new way of seeing art was first shown in his Solitudes series. This was part of his first solo art show in 1955.

From Painting to Sculpture

In 1954, Palazuelo created his first sculpture, named Ascendente no. 2. By 1962, he began to seriously explore space using metal sculptures. His flat drawings started to become three-dimensional artworks.

In 1963, he showed his Onda, Onfalo, and Tierra series. These works showed a new direction in his art. They featured a contrast between large, flat, and colorful shapes.

In 1969, Pablo Palazuelo moved back to Spain. There, he kept exploring the secrets of form through his paintings, sculptures, writings, and research. From 1974, he worked in a 14th-century castle in Monroy, near Cáceres. During this time, he created his Monroy series. This series captured how things change, from their beginning to their end.

Exploring New Ideas

In 1978, "signs" started to appear in his El número y las aguas series. This showed another step in his study of how things are formed.

His Yantra paintings, shown in 1985, were like diagrams of forces. They showed two-dimensional forces and three-dimensional structures. These were like figures of how ideas are created.

His Nigredo, Anamne, and Sinesis series had changing line patterns. These were shown at the Galería Soledad Lorenzo in Madrid. Since 1955, Palazuelo had 23 solo exhibitions. He also took part in many group shows in France, Spain, and other parts of Europe. Palazuelo continued to explore the possibilities of form in his Sydus series.

Exhibitions and Awards

Pablo Palazuelo's art was also shown in group exhibitions in the United States. These shows took place between 1953 and 1975. In 1958, he won the Fifth Carnegie Prize for his work Mandala. This award was given at the Pittsburgh Museum of Art.

Palazuelo received several awards for his art. In 1999, he won Spain's National Award for Plastic Arts. He was seen as one of the most important Spanish artists of his time. Pablo Palazuelo passed away on October 3, 2007, in Madrid.
