The Pacific Building is a cool old office building in downtown Portland, Oregon. It's considered a special historic place. This building has been on the National Register of Historic Places since March 5, 1992. This means it's important to American history and architecture.
Building History
This building was designed by a famous local architect named A.E. Doyle. His company built three similar buildings in Portland. The Pacific Building was the second of these. Charles K. Greene was the main designer for these three buildings. They were all built in a style called Italianate.
The other two buildings were the Bank of California Building and the Public Service Building. A young architect named Pietro Belluschi also started his career working on the Pacific Building. Later, he even had his office there. When the building opened in 1926, A.E. Doyle's company moved its main office into the Pacific Building.
Building Design
The Pacific Building has 10 stories. Pietro Belluschi designed the main lobby inside. The building used to connect to Portland's first underground parking garage. But this connection was removed in 2000. That's when an old bus station above the garage was torn down. A new part of the Hilton Hotel was built there instead.
The building's style mixes two types of architecture. One is the Chicago School style. The other is Italian Renaissance architecture. You can see this mix in its red tile roof and dormer windows. The windows are almost flat with the building's outside walls. This gives it a unique look.
The Million Dollar Cowpasture
The Pacific Building stands in the middle of downtown Portland. It is right across Yamhill Street from the Pioneer Courthouse. This spot used to be the home of the Henry Corbett mansion. That house was built in 1875. It stayed there until the Pacific Building was constructed.
Henry Corbett's wife even kept a cow on the property for a while! This was happening while a big city was growing all around it. Because of this funny mix of old and new, the spot got a nickname. People called it "The Million Dollar Cowpasture."
