The Pacolet Mills Historic District is a special area in Pacolet, South Carolina. It is located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. This district is important because it tells the story of a historic mill village. A mill village was a town built around a factory, often a textile mill.
This historic district includes many old buildings. These buildings help us understand what life was like long ago. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. This means it is recognized as a place worth protecting.
What is a Mill Village?
A mill village was a community created by a factory owner. The factory, or "mill," was usually the main employer. Workers and their families lived in houses built by the company. These villages often had their own stores, churches, and schools.
Life in Pacolet Mills
The Pacolet Mills village was carefully planned. It was built around the year 1919. Most of the houses for workers and supervisors were built between 1915 and 1920. These homes show the styles of that time. They give us a peek into daily life for people working at the mills.
Important Buildings in the District
Even though the main mills are gone, other important buildings remain. The district includes 126 buildings and one special site. These are called "contributing" because they add to the area's history.
Some key buildings you can find here are:
- The Pacolet Mills Cloth Room and Warehouse: This was where finished cloth was stored.
- The Pacolet Mill Office: This building was the center for managing the mill's business.
- Two historic churches: These churches served the community.
The original Pacolet Mills were built in 1883, 1888, 1891, and 1894. These large factories were taken down in the late 1980s. However, the village houses and other buildings still stand. They remind us of the area's rich industrial past.
