The Paddle-tipped Duskhawker (Gynacantha mocsaryi) is a cool type of dragonfly. It belongs to the Aeshnidae family, which includes many large, fast-flying dragonflies. This special insect gets its name from the unique shape of its body.
Where Does It Live?
This dragonfly lives in warm, tropical places. You can find the Paddle-tipped Duskhawker in northern Queensland, Australia. It also lives on the Maluku Islands and in New Guinea. These areas have lots of forests and water, which are perfect for dragonflies.
What Does It Look Like?
The Paddle-tipped Duskhawker is a big dragonfly. It has a dark body. One special thing about it is its "waist." This part of its body, called segment 3 of its abdomen, looks like it's squeezed in. Adult male Paddle-tipped Duskhawkers have a beautiful blue color.
When Does It Fly?
Unlike many dragonflies that fly during the day, the Paddle-tipped Duskhawker is a crepuscular insect. This means it is most active during twilight hours. You will see it flying around at dawn, just as the sun comes up, and at dusk, as the sun goes down.
