Padilla Municipality is a special area, like a county, in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. It's known for its history and for a big dam called Vicente Guerrero Dam. After a flood from this dam in 1970, the main town of Padilla had to move to a new place called Nuevo Padilla.

A Look at Padilla's History

Padilla has a very important place in Mexican history. It's where Agustín de Iturbide, a famous leader and even an emperor of Mexico, was put to death. Another important Mexican general, Manuel de Mier y Terán, also died here.

The town of Padilla was started a long time ago, on January 6, 1749. It was founded by José de Escandón, who was a Spanish leader and the first governor of a region called Nuevo Santander. The town got its name from Maria Padilla, whose husband, Juan Francisco de Güemes, was a "viceroy" – like a governor – for the King of Spain in New Spain (which is now Mexico).

When Padilla was first settled, about 40 people lived there. As of 2010, the whole Padilla Municipality has a population of 14,020 people.

The 2020 Power Outage

On December 28, 2020, a large blackout happened in Mexico. It affected 12 states and more than 10 million people! The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) said that a fire in about 30 hectares (that's like 74 acres) of grasslands in Padilla caused this huge power cut.

However, the Civil Protection Coordination in Tamaulipas disagreed. They said the document presented by the CFE was not real.
