Pageant of Steam facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Pageant of Steam is a super cool yearly event! It's like a big festival that celebrates old-fashioned machines powered by steam. You can find it on Gehan Road, close to a town called Canandaigua in New York State. This fun event started way back in 1960 and is put on by the New York Steam Engine Association.

What to See and Do

The Pageant of Steam usually takes place in August. It starts on a Wednesday and runs all the way through Saturday. There's so much to see and do!

Amazing Steam Engines

The main stars of the show are the giant steam engines. These are powerful machines that use steam to make them move. You can see them working and learn how they helped people in the past. It's like stepping back in time!

Exciting Tractor Pulls

Another big attraction is the antique tractor pull. Here, old tractors compete to see which one can pull the heaviest weight. It's a loud and exciting event where you can cheer for your favorite old machine.

Fun Flea Market Finds

If you love finding treasures, you'll enjoy the huge flea market. A flea market is a place where many different sellers set up booths. They sell all sorts of things, from old toys to unique crafts. You never know what cool stuff you might discover!

Where the Pageant Began

For many years, the Pageant of Steam moved around to different places. One of its early homes was near Canandaigua Lake, at a spot where the Roseland Waterpark used to be.

Finding a Permanent Home

In 1971, the New York Steam Engine Association bought a special piece of land. This land, about 28 acres (113,000 square meters), is on Gehan Road. It's about 3 miles (5 kilometers) east of the City of Canandaigua. This became the permanent home for the Pageant of Steam, so now everyone knows where to find it each year!
