About the Palace of la Espriella
The Palace of la Espriella is a grand country house found in the small area of Villahormes. This area is part of the parish of Hontoria, which is located within the Asturian region of Llanes.
History of the Palace
This palace was first started in 1616. It was built for the noble Espriella family from Llanes. At that time, a member of the family was living in Palermo.
The palace has been updated two times since it was first built. The first changes were made in the 18th century. The second and final major changes happened in the 19th century.
Palace Design and Features
The Palace of la Espriella has a rectangular shape. It is built around a central open courtyard. The building is made from strong limestone, with special lime details.
A very important feature is the family's coat of arms, or noble shield. This shield is proudly displayed above the main entrance.
The palace has two main floors. The ground floor was used for daily activities. This included areas for stables, where horses were kept, and cellars for storage. There was also a llagar, which is a place for making cider.
The upper floor was where the family who owned the palace lived. This floor had the main rooms, bedrooms, and an office. An extra part of the building, which gives it its rectangular shape, holds the kitchen, ovens, and dining room.
In a separate section on the upper floor, there were rooms set aside for the servants.
Notable Person Born Here
A famous person born in this palace was Federico Bernaldo de Quirós y Mier. He was known as the Marqués consorte de Argüelles, which means he was married to a noblewoman named María Josefa Argüelles Díaz.
